Assessment Grade Descriptor Grids

Assessment 2019-2020

Key Stage 3

For students in Years 7 and 9, we are introducing age related expectations of grades based on the GCSE 9-1 grading system from September 2019.  These will show what the student would be expected to achieve at the end of Year 11, based on their current level of work.

The descriptors of the age related expectations are displayed in each subject’s Assessment Grade Descriptor Grids, using a common five column format, which are shared with students in school and parents via the school website.

Students are set challenging targets based on prior KS2 attainment scores, and other data sources such as MIDYIS tests (completed in the first few week of Year 7) and Family Fischer Trust (FFT) Targets. Where students do not have a prior KS2 attainment score (e.g. they attended KS2 at an independent school or abroad) the target will be generated from teachers’ judgements of what would be an appropriate aspirational target.

The distribution of grades across the year group would be expected to be around the following guidance, although some subject areas may be skewed due to option choices and rotational setting structures. This guidance is based on previous performance and National Standards.

Year 8 students will continue using our existing progress reporting, based on a 4-1 level against expected progress towards a minimum expected outcome (MEO), for a further year.  The MEO is based on prior KS2 attainment scores and other data sources (e.g. Midyis tests at the beginning of Year 7 and FFT targets using national statistics), and provides a flightpath towards GSCE grades of either 3, 4 or 6+.

Key Stage 4

For students in Years 10 and 11, data is collected in the form of predicted grades based on GCSE 9-1 grades, with challenging target grades generated, reflecting what students would need to achieve in order to obtain a positive Progress 8 score in that subject. Students who join the school in Year 10 without KS2 prior attainment scores will sit YELLIS tests to generate meaningful target grades.

Key Stage 5

Student data is collected in the form of predicted grades based on A Level A*-E grades. Targets are based on previous Key Stage 4 performance.
